off set type- ink cartridge spilled a ton of ink. freq. so it must have been wasting ink the whole time as well.works fine for basic printing needs (words only), image quality for photos or images is pretty basic. - within first month of owning it a plastic object broke off (the auto detecttion for open cover). printer jams + bad prints.
but really, this printer is poorly made.looks nice but its a dud. bought this printer 2 years ago while i was in college. so for 2 year ive had an old pair of scissors propped into the place where the plastic broke off just to get the machine to work.- the plastic paper holder broke off rather easily, so ive had to place a piece of cardboard under the printer to hold the paper to feed.- exp. just realized that as i removed a gum-sized hardened ink from the bottom of the printer.
I did this and now the printer works flawlessly with no jams or hiccups. The printer itself works well with great output quality, it's a shame that the rollers are the cause of headaches. With the Q-tip covered in rubbing alcohol, gently clean each roller's surface making sure to rotate the roller as you go. The solution is simple: isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and a couple of Q-tips. The printer is in fantastic condition and prints pictures and text clearly and fast, that is when it is not jamming up with paper.What I have discovered upon careful examination of the inner workings is that the material of the rollers (some type of rubber) easily attracts household dust and tiny paper dust as the paper is gripped and rolled over them. I received this printer used from my mom because she got fed up with the paper jams and feed problems that plagued it. If this continues for a period of time, the paper starts slipping and can not be grabbed properly to feed it through thus resulting in paper jams and ripped papers. Allow them all to air-dry (a couple minutes time).
However, I find it more an annoyance than a major problem (hence, the 4 stars).Overall, then, I have found this to be fairly dependable--but with the annoying habit of chewing up paper sometimes when the feed goes awry. That is, my experience has been that the black and white as well as color cartridges generate quite a few copies before I need to replace them.The downside. The DeskJet 5940 has been sitting in my home office next to my computer for several years now. It has never needed repair and it gets decent "mileage" from the cartridges. As others have noted, it tends to jam--especially when I use recycled paper.
The color ink. And it's slow. Save yourself the time and energy and annoyance factor--buy something--anything--else. From the first day, this printer has jammed. It doesn't matter what paper it's using, it jams. I swear there is nothing in the cartridge.
Long live customer service. I know nothing lasts forever; however, it should last more than a year. Took 15 minutes just to convey my name and number. I would not recommend HP products based on this experience and a previous one involving their 'customer support' looking up my issue in Google (no lie, this what they told me over the phone) and an HP hard drive. I have been plagued with paper feed problems from the start.
Customer service is dead. Finally I was told there was no option other than upgrade to a newer printer for a cost. This printer never reliably fed HP paper and recently completely quit feeding paper all together. Bought this printer about a year ago. Called HP customer support only to be helped by a person who spoke very poor english.
Buyer beware.
